Key Personnel:
Jon Dietz, Ph.D. EXPERTISE AREAS: Acid Mine Drainage Treatment (active & passive), Watershed Assessments, Watershed Restoration Plans, Water Quality Studies, NPDES permitting, NEPA studies EDUCATION: BS Biology & Earth Science, Clarion University, 1983 MS Environmental Pollution Control, Pennsylvania State University, 1989 PhD Environmental Engineering, Pennsylvania State University, 2003 DISSERTATION TOPIC: Ferrous Iron Sorption & Heterogeneous Oxidation on Iron Oxides OTHER RESEARCH AREAS: Manganese Oxidation Calcite Solubility & Dissolution Kinetics BIOGRAPHY: Jon Dietz has spent more than 17 years in the consulting industry conducting Mine Drainage related studies, NEPA studies, water quality and aquatic ecology assessments, R&D of innovative technologies, designing mine drainage treatment systems, and developing new and innovative treatment systems. Jon returned to Penn State University from the consulting industry in 2000 to continue his education and study environmental engineering & chemistry and has recently graduated with his Doctorate in Environmental Engineering. During his doctorate Jon developed “new” heterogeneous (surface chemistry) ferrous iron sorption & oxidation kinetic models, which he has used to develop the next generation of AMD treatment systems, known as AIS/SBR treatment of mine drainage. Jon also conducted research into abiotic manganese oxidation kinetics and alkalinity generation from limestone, based on kinetics and solubility reactions, which he has used to develop new passive treatment approaches. During his professional career Jon has conducted numerous AMD abatement projects including watershed assessments, watershed restoration plans, and prepared final and conceptual designs for over 30 discharges in the eastern U.S. coal region. He also has provided technical expertise on water resource studies including a variety of Environmental Assessments (EA), Environmental Impact Statements (EIS), 319 thermal discharge studies, National Pollution Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) studies, and surface water quality standards for ammonia (that have been promulgated for New Jersey waters). Jon has authored and/or co-authored over 50 technical reports, journal articles, proceedings and presentations during his professional career. Tim Gourley, P.E. EXPERTISE AREAS: Master Planning, Site Feasibility Studies, Land Development Plans, Utility Coordination, E&S Control Plans, Stormwater Management Plans EDUCATION: BS Civil & Environmental Engineering, Lafayette College, 1998 MS Civil Engineering: Geomechanics, Geotechnical & Geoenvironmental Engineering, State University of New York at Buffalo, 2005 BIOGRAPHY: Tim Gourley has spent more than 7 years in the consulting engineering field working with a variety of public and private clients. Tim's initial duties included the review of land development and stormwater management plans submitted for municipal approval and then progressed to full scale design of land development projects. As part of full scale design, Tim designed the site layout, developed the E&S and stormwater management plans, coordinated the various utilities and regulatory permitting required for the project and was responsible for project coordination with the developer. In addition, Tim designed sanitary sewer rehabilitation projects for municipal authorties. Prior to joining Dietz-Gourley Consulting, LLC, Tim completed a M.S. in Civil, Structural, and Environmental Engineering at the State University of New York at Buffalo. The primary focus of the M.S. degree is in Geomechanics, Geotechnical & Geoenvironmental Engineering and his studies also included hydraulics and hydraulic design and geographic information systems (GIS). Tim is a licensed professional engineer in Pennsylvania and New York.
